Triiodothyronine (T3)
Triiodothyronine, usually just called T3, is a thyroid hormone that sits at the centre of several key physiological processes — metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, growth and development. It directly shapes how the body metabolises carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which makes it a critical piece of the overall metabolic puzzle.
Medical Use
T3 is primarily used in the treatment of hypothyroidism — a condition in which the body does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Symptoms often include fat gain, low energy, cold intolerance, hair thinning and difficulty losing fat. In such cases, low doses of T3 can restore normal thyroid function and lift metabolic health. The goal here is therapeutic, not performance-driven.
Performance Use
Within sports and bodybuilding, T3 is sometimes brought in to accelerate fat loss — especially during cutting phases. Paired with a calorie-restricted diet, T3 can push fat-burning significantly by raising metabolic rate. However, that usually calls for higher doses, which can trigger muscle tissue breakdown on the back of higher energy demand and ATP depletion.
To offset that, many athletes stack T3 with anabolic steroids to preserve lean muscle mass. Without an anabolic base, high-dose T3 use can tip into catabolism — the body dismantling muscle tissue for energy.
Key Points
-
Essential thyroid hormone regulating metabolism and energy production
-
Clinically used to treat hypothyroidism and restore proper metabolic function
-
Popular among athletes for its potent fat-burning properties
-
Best paired with anabolic support to prevent muscle loss across fat-reduction cycles
-
To be used with caution given its potency and impact on lean tissue
